A SUMMER FESTIVAL FOR VISUAL ART AND CREATIVE WRITING

This week-long summer festival will provide students with a comprehensive and engaging introduction to visual art and creative writing. The festival is tailored specifically for music students, who will have the opportunity to engage with different art forms to help enrich their music studies. Workshops will include an introduction to art history, poetry, drawing and writing techniques, as well as hands-on, interactive learning.

Goals of the festival:

  • To expand artistic and creative modes of expression
  • To encourage interdisciplinary study, i.e. exploring different forms of art, along with their relationships to music, which allows for a greater and deeper understanding of the creative arts in general
  • To provide an arts curriculum tailored for music students
  • To teach students how to work on artistic projects, both individually and collaboratively

The festival will be held at the Opus119 The School of Music. There will be two week-long sessions: the first session, July 23-29, will be for students ages 8-11. The second session, July 30-August 5, will be for students ages 12-15. Refer to detailed schedule below for more information.

The cost of a session will be $280 per student, including art materials, all workshops, the field trip, and the final gallery presentation. Students must attend every workshop session, including the group sessions, for the full benefit of the festival. Students must also attend the field trip and the final gallery exhibit, not only to see their own work displayed but also to support their fellow peers! For additional questions or concerns, please contact Phoebe at ppan@oberlin.edu or Lilian at lilytingpan@gmail.com.

PLEASE NOTE: We need a minimum of 6 students to enroll in each week of the festival for the festival to proceed. If we do not reach the minimum number of enrolled students, then we will have to cancel the festival and replace it with weekend workshops. More information about this will be updated mid-June, once we have a better idea of the number of potential students looking to enroll.

SCHEDULE AND EVENTS

Below is an outline of the workshop and event schedule. We will be hosting field trips on the Saturday of each session! These excursions are for the purpose of inviting students to survey works of art outside of a classroom setting. Field trip options include an outdoor picnic or a trip to an art museum (to be decided by July). Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide transportation for all students.
